Biography

The artistic journey of pianist Swetlana Meermann-Muret is marked by a fascinating confluence of three cultures — Russian, German, and French — within which she has lived and studied music.
This cultural diversity nourishes her piano playing and her personality, where Russian emotional depth, German discipline, and French sensitivity blend to form a musical language of great richness and rare authenticity.

Education Across Three Countries

Born in Lipetsk, Russia, into a family of professional musicians, Swetlana began studying piano at the age of seven with Olga Shepeleva at music school. After it she entered the Regional Special School of Arts for Gifted Children, still in Olga Shepeleva’s class.

In 1996, thanks to her mother’s German roots, the family settled in Germany. Swetlana completed her baccalaureate at the Landesmusikgymnasium in Montabaur in the piano classe of Natalia Adomeit, and was later admitted as a Jungstudentin (preparatory student) at the Music Conservatory in Frankfurt. She studies there in the class of the great pianist Irina Edelstein,  elle-même élève de Jakob Milstein (élève de K.Igomnov) au Conservatoire Tchaïkovski de Moscou.

In 2007, Swetlana earned her Master’s degree in Piano and Pedagogy nd subsequently perfected her artistry at the Music Conservatory in Karlsruhe or postgraduated studies working with Michael Uhde and Markus Stange. In 2010, she got the Concert Diploma with highest honors.. 

As part of the Erasmus program she also studied at the Music Conservatory in Lyon and Paris (CNSMD) - both prestigious institution in France in the class off Géry Moutier and Brigitte Engerer.

Swetlana enriched her education by participating in international masterclasses with renewed musicians such asNaum Starkman, Rudolf Kehrer, Anatol Ugorski, Evgeny Malinin, Lilya Zilberstein, Oxana Yablonskaya, Menahem Pressler, Martin Helmchen, Eugène Wangler, Jean-Claude Pennetier, Jean Mouillère, Jeff Cohen, and many others.

Awards and Scolarships

Swetlana is a prize-winner of numerous national and international competitions :

In Russia, at age 12, she won Concours International de Igumnov de Lipetsk and subsequently 1st Prize at Concours Jeunes Talents de Voronej.
She was also a multiple prize-winner at the Jugend Musiziert National Competition as soloist and chamber musician.
In France, Swetlana was a laureate of the International Piano Competition of Brest, and the International Piano Competition “Flamme” in Paris, Forum Musical Normandie, Concours International Lied & Mélodie de Gordes and Concours International des Familles.

She was a finalist at the Duchi d’Aquaviva Chamber Music Competition and at the Concerto Competition of the MasterWorks Festival (USA), performing Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2.

Winner of the 8th “Lied & Mélodie” Competition in Gordes in France, Swetlana has a deep affinity for vocal accompaniment, exploring the relationship between text and music with rare sensitivity. In particular, she is a passionate interpreter of the Russian Art Song.

Swetlana has received scholarships from the City of Lipetsk and the Russian State, as well as awards from the ZIRP Foundation (Zukunftsinitiative Rheinland-Pfalz), Villa Musica, the Lions Club Neuwied-Andernach Prize, the DAAD Prize, and the Académie Musicale de Villecroze (France).

Chamber music projects & repertoire

Passionate about chamber music and collaboration with other musicians, Swetlana was a scholar of the Villa Musica Foundation (Chamber Music Fondation) in Germany.
 There, she performed in various ensembles under the guidance of renewed musicians such as Menahem Pressler, Martin Ostertag, Nicolas Schumachenko and had the privilege of appearing alongside them in concerts throughout Germany. This unique experience profoundly enriched and shaped her artistic approach. 

Swetlana performs in a wide range of chamber music projects with many different musicians— from piano four hands duos to piano quintets, including the SwetArtTrio with accordion and violin, which she founded with her parents.

Soloist with Orchestra

At the age of sixteen, Swetlana made her solo debut performing Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with the Southampton Youth Orchestra.

After then, she has collaborated with orchestras such as the Staatsorchester Rheinische Philharmonie and the Philharmonie Baden-Baden. With the latter, she performed Piano Concerto No. 2 by Rachmaninoff– her heart composer, for her final exam of her post graduated studies at the Musikhochschule Karlsruhe, earning special distinction from the jury.

In 2024, she was invited by Alexandra Conus Rachmaninov, the great-granddaughter of Sergei Rachmaninov, to perform works by the composer at the Sergei Rachmaninov Conservatory in Paris.

Exploring hidden repertoires

Swetlana is passionate about revealing the hidden beauty of lesser-known repertoires.

Her first recording, released in 2005 by Wersi (Germany), combined major works by Scarlatti, Chopin, and Scriabin with Basso Ostinato by Rodion Chedrin (1932–2025).

In 2021, she dedicated her album Miniatures russes (recorded with Genuin Classics and SWR2 Radio in Germany) Anatoli Liadov and Anton Arensky – two importants figures of Russian Romanticism
The recording was highly praised by the international press (BBC Music Magazine, Piano News, Staccato, Fono Forum, Web International, SWR2, WDR, among others), revealing an artist of remarkable refinement —, combining virtuosity,, emotional depth, and authenticity.

“Miniatures russes” was chosen as “CD of the Week” by WDR Kultur and is regularly broadcast on German radio.

International Projects
and cultural outreach

Her career as a versatile musician has led her to numerous international stages and festivals, where she has performed in around twenty countries as a soloist, chamber musician, and accompanist. 

She is also committed to humanitarian work and cultural mediation, She has taken part in projects such as Music Road Rwanda (with cellist Marie-Elisabeth Hecker), a seven-concert tour across Transylvania, school performances within the Muzik Festival in Afyonkarahisar, Turkey, concerts in Mauritius, as well as numerous performances with Crescendo International in Hungary, Germany, France, and Switzerland. 

Her solo performance at the Crescendo International Festival in Cahul, Moldova, in 2022 was broadcast live on Moldovan television. She has also appeared on television in Russia and Germany and has given numerous radio interviews in several countries.

In 2023, she launched her project of Home concerts in Décines in France – a meeting place where classical music is experienced differently.

two professions, one passion.

Swetlana Meermann-Muret combines her career as a concert pianist with a deep devotion to teaching.
She has taught piano both in France and Germany, in prestigious institutions such as Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Lyon (CNSMD), the Music Conservatory in Karlsruhe, the Regional Conservatories of Lyon and Grenoble (CRR), the CRD of Bourg-la-Reine, and at INSA Lyon as well as at different music schools.


Swetlana has also been invited to give masterclasses at the Crescendo Summer Institute in Hungary, the Landesmusikakademie Rheinland-Pfalz in Germany, at the Music School of Cahul in Moldova, at Music School of Kigali.

She is a regular jury member at the Long-Thibaud Piano Competition and Concours des Grands Amateurs in Paris.
